Craniosacral Therapy (CST) was developed in the late 1970's by an osteopathic physician named John E. Upledger.
Much like our lungs and and heart which operate rhythmically and automatically without any specific input from us, our craniosacral system also has a specific rhythm and function that must operate correctly for optimal health and vitality. The craniocsacral system is comprised of the bones of the head, spinal column, and pelvis/sacrum, the underlying meningeal membranes which surround and envelope the brain and spinal cord, and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which cushions, lubricates, and may provide nutrients to the central nervous system.
Our craniosacral system is a semi-closed, hydraulic system which necessitates the proper movement of the bones of our cranium, sacrum, membranes, and massaging of our brain for optimal functioning of our central nervous system. If any of these structures inhibit the optimal flow and rhythm of our craniosacral system, complications in health, physiological function, and mental development may occur.
For example, say someone gave you a great big bear hug (the kind that squeezes and compresses your chest making it hard to breath). No big deal, right? Because we know that it won't last forever and it will soon be over. But, what if that sensation continued indefinately? How would this affect you? Short-rapid breathing, increased heart rate, decreased mobility and physical activity, and increased stress and irritability just to name a few.
This is exactly what happens when our craniosacral system is compromised, compressed, and restricted. Our brain feels the constant pressure of the trauma, stress, tension, or compression only this time there's no end in sight and the brain is incapable of reestablishing normalcy on it's own by releasing that which is causing the pressure.
The brain is the body's central processing unit. It orchestrates, dictates, communicates, interprets, and analyzes every single bodily function. Imagine talking on your cell phone with an extremely important person who was giving you the coordinates for a buried treasure. During which time your connection became fuzzy, cutting in and out, and eventually the call was dropped. You were only able to hear one of the coordinates. Would you be able to find the buried treasure? Probably not! Similarly, if our craniosacral system is compromising our central nervous system, our brain may be trying to communicate with the rest of our body, but our body may not be recieving all the information in it's entirety. So our body does the best it can with the information it has to work with and sometimes, unfortunately, the information and the body gets lost.
Craniosacral Therapy helps to restore balance, symmetry, and proper functioning to the most important organ in our body, our brain and spinal cord, through the craniosacral system.
